WOMAN OF MANY DOORS
A Series by Tiffany Owens
It was just me and Laura. We had slipped out of the room full of adults and found ourselves side by side in the hammock. Only each other and the stars heard what we said that night. Somethings are best left that way. She smiles gently as she confides. I smile back in the dark as I listen. My heart breaks a little for her. Then its my turn. My passion propels me up, I swing one foot over the edge and look out over the lake. “Laura,” I say. “You have to be…” The lake hums as I search for the right allegory. “You have to be a woman of many doors.” It’s raw profundity, I realize as I illustrate the idea of a heart so treasured and valued that it takes a true friend to discover what makes you who you are.
Hearts these days are too quickly dished up like cafeteria food. The first guy who walks buy becomes the object of our infatuation in less than 10 seconds. After two ball games too many girls are far too quick to jump into a car with Mr. Dashing. Alone. Many girls don’t take the time to really know themselves before they end up with broken hearts that have been dealt out like playing cards.
A woman of many doors is a woman who treasures her heart and who takes the time to protect it from untimely and “microwave” commitments. She’s behind the door, many doors, and only the true and honorable will find her.
